Science Lesson Plans are magical when learned in Harry Potter’s Chamber of Secrets at Hogwarts. Elementary education level students will use their imaginations to become wizard graduates as they perform the philosopher’s easy science experiments. Let your students push up their robe cuffs with all your science lessons plans this term.

Science lessons plans can include disappearing water through evaporation, or making a magical rainbow from prisms. Magical potion concoctions from Kool-Aid can add a treat. Try a science lesson plan by growing Basilisk Fang plants in a pot of dirtless, hydroponic soil.

Elementary education kids will love solving mysteries by gathering clues about the forests and fields around them. What magical creatures will they learn about next?

These science lesson plans can make real wizards out of all of them.

Science lessons plans involving the Golden Snitch, disappearing ink, fingerprint clues, mystery powers and bubble powders will excite every elementary education student in your science classes with Harry Potter’s easy science experiments. Your classes will make all your students want to come to school on science days.

Science lesson plans with Hagrid and his magical animal friend Buckbeak were always an exciting class for Harry, Ron and Hermione. They went deep into the forest for each science lesson with other classmates from Gryffindor as well as those from Slytherin House who were not as taken with the lessons.

When organizing animal and bird science lesson plans for your class, you can incorporate a little bit of Hogwarts’ lessons ideas. Some animals have characteristics and habits that are different from the norm. Perhaps these animals or birds have a bit of creative magic in them similar to that of Fawkes the Phoenix or Hedwig the Owl.

Some species have wonderful and unusual colors in the feathers or furs. Why is this? Why does the coloring of males differ from their female counterparts? Why do some animals life deep in the forest, or jungles while the habitat of others is near the oceans or the deserts? Why are some nocturnal, while others are not?

Science lesson plans can also incorporate art lessons. Drawing mystical creatures or real life ones can be fun. Reading lesson plans can also incorporate literature from the Harry Potter series, creating an entire Harry Potter module for your class this year.

Harry, Ron and Hermione loved their lessons in the greenhouse at Hogwarts school. Each science lesson plan about plants studied with other classmates from Gryffindor and Slytherin House taught them much about the care for living things in their world. Although their world differs a great deal from ours, we need to understand the importance of plant life in our world too.

There are many different types of plants that can be incorporated into your lesson plans. Some plants thrive in dry sunny areas while other prefer shade and more moisture. Some species can withstand colder climates, while others can not. Some plants do indeed seem to be magical, such as the Venus Fly Catcher. Why do some plants live for many years and others survive only one season before wilting and dying? These many facets of plant life should be addressed in your plant science lesson plans.

Science lesson plans can also include actual student gardens with a hands-on approach as did those lessons at Hogarts with Harry Potter and his friends. An area in your school yard can be fenced off for a gardening club. Students can learn how to plant vegetables and flowers, to care for them and to harvest them. Your lessons can include the proper use of gardening tools for cultivation as well as the importance of composting. A teacher friend of mind has done this at her school quite successfully for many years. Parent volunteers are helpful, especially Dads for the heavier work. Local nurseries have helped supply topsoil, fertilizers and mulches.

Flowers are picked for bouquets each June for the school tea. And during the summer time, students and their families share in weekly assignments of watering, weeding, harvesting and caring for the garden.

There are many aspects of gardening and plant knowledge that can be incorporated into your science lesson plans. The children love getting their hands dirty and are amazed each week as they watch their garden grow. This hands on approach will have a much greater learning experience than reading from a book.

Try some of these interesting ideas to help keep your students focused and interested in science this year.

With magic and mystery inspired by the Harry Potter stories, many ideas for teaching strategies and lesson plans come to mind. You can let your imagination run wild.

Science lessons plans incorporating evidence for solving mysteries such as fingerprints, dental impressions and disappearing ink come to mind. Invite a member of your local police force to come and give a basic talk to your students on how they solve crimes using this type of evidence. Is there a student in your class who has had dental impressions or molds made from plaster of paris during a treatment for teeth straightening with braces? Using water based paints, demonstrate how each student has finger prints that differ from everyone else. Hand print artwork can then be done. Turn hand prints into imaginary butterflies or birds.

Hermione’s Time Turner can be incorporated into your history lessons. Turn back the time to yesteryear and discuss the people and events from that time.

One of my favorite items from Harry Potter is the Sorting Hat. First year Hogwarts students are sorted into the four (4) houses of Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or I have found the official Harry Potter store where many of these items can be purchased (see below for url).Slytherin. The hat’s mouth actually can be made to move. This is a wonderful item to use around Hallowe’en time or any time in the classroom. Reward a student for good behavior or marks by letting them wear the hat. Choose students to read passages from thier story book readers out loud to the class while wearing the Sorting Hat. Or perhaps the day class monitor can wear the hat while they perform their daily duty. There are so many ways to incorporate this hat into your lesson plans and teaching strategies.

There are 3 Magic Wands that were used by the children in the Harry Potter books. One way to use wands in the classroom can be when the children choose teams for various activities they can select each person with the use of a wand. Children may wish to make their own wands in art class from various “magical” materials.

Learning to tell time lesson plans and to keep the correct dates can be done while employing one of the several wall or desk calendars or watches. As well, children can make their own Harry Potter wall posters.

There are journals available to encourage students to write their thoughts in on a daily basis. Perhaps they can write magical stories too.

And last but not least, all teaching strategies incorporate reading into their lesson plans. There are several Harry Potter bookmarks that students will love to use to keep their place in their readers or books. What a great idea for end of school (encourage reading during the summer holidays), back to school or Christmas gifts from the teacher.

Following are short descriptions of several Harry Potter merchandise items as found online in the Harry Potter Shop.

Collectible Time Turner:
The red journal has a recreation of Platform 9 3/4 on the cover and is filled with lighting bolts on each lined page. The green journal has Hedwig on the cover and a magic wand graces each blank page.

Why not change the format of your comprehension questioning in your reading lesson plans for each Harry Potter novel? This will in fact work with any novel study.

After each chapter or section of the book is completed, ask your students to submit a trivia question about what they have just read. The questions can be both simple and complex. The teacher will also strategically add his/her own questions, making sure to cover the comprehension and/or grammar questions that are important. Spelling questions can also be added using new words learned from that chapter. Trivia can also include questions on other lessons such as science and math which relate to the passages that have been read.

After all the questions have been received, divide your class into the 4 Hogwarts house teams: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin. These four teams can be changed from time to time for each new book or they may be kept constant. The competition among the children in each house will further increase their desire to read effectively so they can help their teams. Children with more advanced reading and comprehension skills will want to help out those in their teams who may be struggling, thus offering some peer coaching.

Children will look forward to reading the assigned chapters and learn to enjoy reading and to comprehend the written content much more effectively when Harry Potter Trivia is used in your classroom.

Throughout every school year at Hogwarts School, Harry Potter and his schoolmates worked on a point system on their house teams. The 4 teams in the Harry Potter novels were Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin.

The students were sorted into their teams on the first day of school when they arrived at Hogwarts for their very first year. You may wish to sort your students for the entire year, semester, month or week depending on what you will think work best for your group. Teachers wishing to purchase a real Hogwarts Sorting Hat can find one online in the Harry Potter Shop. along with many other terrific Harry Potter items which can complement your teaching strategies.

Each student can gain or lose points for their team based on their attendance, punctuality, classroom participation, working cooperatively with other classmates, following instructions or completing tasks on time. As well, points may be gained or lost for their team based on academic achievement, sports intramural activities to promote good health and physical fitness, classroom monitoring jobs etc. There are many various ways that allow each team to compete with each other.

Students need to be able to learn how to work effectively as a team, with others as well as individually. The peer pressure from their team members will help motivate positive responses from a student often more effectively than the teacher can motivate alone.

At the end of the competition, there should be a reward that the teacher will chose depending on what is most appropriate for his/her group of students. Work a little magic into your classroom activities this year. Challenge your students effectively.
