Science Lesson Plans are magical when learned in Harry Potter’s Chamber of Secrets at Hogwarts. Elementary education level students will use their imaginations to become wizard graduates as they perform the philosopher’s easy science experiments. Let your students push up their robe cuffs with all your science lessons plans this term.

Science lessons plans can include disappearing water through evaporation, or making a magical rainbow from prisms. Magical potion concoctions from Kool-Aid can add a treat. Try a science lesson plan by growing Basilisk Fang plants in a pot of dirtless, hydroponic soil.

Elementary education kids will love solving mysteries by gathering clues about the forests and fields around them. What magical creatures will they learn about next?

These science lesson plans can make real wizards out of all of them.

Science lessons plans involving the Golden Snitch, disappearing ink, fingerprint clues, mystery powers and bubble powders will excite every elementary education student in your science classes with Harry Potter’s easy science experiments. Your classes will make all your students want to come to school on science days.

Science lesson plans with Hagrid and his magical animal friend Buckbeak were always an exciting class for Harry, Ron and Hermione. They went deep into the forest for each science lesson with other classmates from Gryffindor as well as those from Slytherin House who were not as taken with the lessons.

When organizing animal and bird science lesson plans for your class, you can incorporate a little bit of Hogwarts’ lessons ideas. Some animals have characteristics and habits that are different from the norm. Perhaps these animals or birds have a bit of creative magic in them similar to that of Fawkes the Phoenix or Hedwig the Owl.

Some species have wonderful and unusual colors in the feathers or furs. Why is this? Why does the coloring of males differ from their female counterparts? Why do some animals life deep in the forest, or jungles while the habitat of others is near the oceans or the deserts? Why are some nocturnal, while others are not?

Science lesson plans can also incorporate art lessons. Drawing mystical creatures or real life ones can be fun. Reading lesson plans can also incorporate literature from the Harry Potter series, creating an entire Harry Potter module for your class this year.

Harry, Ron and Hermione loved their lessons in the greenhouse at Hogwarts school. Each science lesson plan about plants studied with other classmates from Gryffindor and Slytherin House taught them much about the care for living things in their world. Although their world differs a great deal from ours, we need to understand the importance of plant life in our world too.

There are many different types of plants that can be incorporated into your lesson plans. Some plants thrive in dry sunny areas while other prefer shade and more moisture. Some species can withstand colder climates, while others can not. Some plants do indeed seem to be magical, such as the Venus Fly Catcher. Why do some plants live for many years and others survive only one season before wilting and dying? These many facets of plant life should be addressed in your plant science lesson plans.

Science lesson plans can also include actual student gardens with a hands-on approach as did those lessons at Hogarts with Harry Potter and his friends. An area in your school yard can be fenced off for a gardening club. Students can learn how to plant vegetables and flowers, to care for them and to harvest them. Your lessons can include the proper use of gardening tools for cultivation as well as the importance of composting. A teacher friend of mind has done this at her school quite successfully for many years. Parent volunteers are helpful, especially Dads for the heavier work. Local nurseries have helped supply topsoil, fertilizers and mulches.

Flowers are picked for bouquets each June for the school tea. And during the summer time, students and their families share in weekly assignments of watering, weeding, harvesting and caring for the garden.

There are many aspects of gardening and plant knowledge that can be incorporated into your science lesson plans. The children love getting their hands dirty and are amazed each week as they watch their garden grow. This hands on approach will have a much greater learning experience than reading from a book.

Try some of these interesting ideas to help keep your students focused and interested in science this year.

Soy candles are made from soy wax. Soy wax is a hydrogenated form of soybean oil. Soy wax was invented by Michael Richards in 1992 as an alternative to beeswax.

Soy candles are similar to regular candles made of beeswax, paraffin or other oils. But they have some definite advantages: they are cheaper; they are natural; they are environmentally friendly since they do not release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere; they last longer – almost 50% longer than paraffin candles; they are non-toxic and non-carcinogenic, hence they don’t trigger any allergies; they are bio-degradable (since soy is a vegetable byproduct); they are from renewable resources; they burn evenly with a steady flame; the wax burns cooler than paraffin, thus sending more fragrance into the air; and they also produce less soot – almost 90% less than that from paraffin candles. This makes soy candles are the more preferable over other kinds of candles.

Soy candle making is a relatively easy art and just requires practice. All it needs is to melt the soy wax, add color dyes or fragrance oils or any other additives. The melted wax should be poured into containers or moulds that contain a wick. It generally takes a night for the wax to cool down.

Soy candle supplies are for making soy candles. The main soy candle making supplies required are: soy candle wax, soy-based fragrances, soy dye/colorant chips, soy-coated wicks, moulds, metal tins, jars and containers. There are also soy candle supplies kits available. Prices of these kits start from $10 for a soy tart kit, $12.00 for a primitive soy candle kit and $34.00 for an intermediate soy candle making kit. A soy candle making kit for beginners is priced at $15.00.

Soy candle supplies can be obtained very easily. They are also available in bulk at wholesale prices. Soy candles supplies can also be ordered online through the various websites over the Internet. The orders can be placed by phone, fax, or e-mail, or by filling in direct order forms in the websites. Payment can be made by credit card, check, money order or PayPal. Some suppliers also give provision for returning the supplies if not satisfied. There are many such sites over the Internet that provide comprehensive information about soy candle supplies.

I am by no means a beading expert. I am much more proficient and capable when it comes to needlepoint and embroidery. You can guess my knowledge of beading supplies is practically as limited as my beading experience supplies is. However, I had the fortunate experience of working on a piece that called for said beading supplies. In other words, I got an instant lesson or two.

The first discovery I made, while viewing the pattern for the embroidery piece that called for beading supplies (which I found out AFTER I bought the beautiful pattern), was that beads are, of course, of different types. Okay you might think you know what I’m talking about but I doubt you appreciate the significance of it. There are literally hundreds of types and styles of beads in a typical store thousands (no exaggeration) in a large one. So for my particular pattern I needed 00275 coral glass seed beads; 02024 heather mauve glass seed beads; 02025 heather glass seed beads; 03005 platinum rose antique glass beads; and 05555 new penny glass pebble beadsall by a maker of bead supplies called Mill Hill.

Why do all these infinitesimal details matter? Why do I have to write everything down, including there specific codes? First, I live (by choice) way the hell out in the woods, the closest crafts stores twelve and nineteen miles away. I need to the right beads the first time I visit a store because I simply can’t reverse the wheel upon discovering that I have bought the wrong color. Second, I have ADDAttention Deficit Disorder. A missing bead means the piece cannot be completed. And third, the pattern, an elaborate one with thousands of stitches and almost fifty colors, would need the right bead supplies to make the color scheme and texture, etc., work. It does not make sense to substitute just any shade in there.

The first store, one I like very much and frequent, had limited bead supplies of the brand I needed. In fact, they didn’t/don’t carry Mill Hill. So I came back home and searched the Internet to see if I could identify the color and style of bead and try to find some substitutes. Back to the first store and to a wall of bead supplies, I felt dizzy and confused. So I tried the next store, another town away, on another day. There I encountered not just one but three walls of bead supplies, of numerous brands, colors, sizes, shapes, and usability degrees. I spent a good hour perusing the beautiful, the ugly, and the ill-fitting beads for my project. I gave up and moved on to the rest of the items on my list. After another half hour, I found, in the NEEDLEPOINT section, not in the bead supplies section, argggh, Mill Hill beads. And of the five styles I needed found 2 in the exact quantity required and one in half the amount I needed.

Sometimes a LOT is too muchand not nearly enough. Of probably five- to ten-thousand dollars’ worth of bead supplies, I came away with five dollars’ worth of the right beads. Thank God for the internet. It made my life so much easier. Perhaps next time I should order online in the first place.

Are Office Supply Super Stores Killing Your Business?

Have you ever noticed how convenient those giant office super stores are? I mean we all use them. They’re on every corner out here in the suburbs of Boston. It’s Officethis or Officethat or something like Paperclips, you know, all the major players. Well, I’ve recently realized that over the past 10 years of prosperity that my small business has been paying a huge premium for this convenience. In the past several months, as a result of the recent economic downturn in our local economy, I have been doing everything I can to plug the holes in our spending and trying to “trim the fat” so to speak. Fortunately this is something that myself, my competition and other local business owners are not familiar with. We have all prospered and have rarely, if ever, worried about money.

One evening I was shopping with my family at Wal-Mart loading up on family stuff and I couldn’t help but notice that the same 100ct (or very similar) manila folders that I paid nearly $7.00 for several hours earlier at Officethat were available at Wal-Mart at an everyday low price of $1.77. Now, I never claimed to be a genius but a $5.00 difference on a product that I buy 5 boxes of a month is a $25.00 a month savings. That of course is $300 a year.

I quickly realized that I was on to something but I figured it was just a fluke. I had also bought a new water bubbler and a mini bar type refrigerator earlier and they both cost $149.00 each so I figured I would go and check out that aisle as well. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I found a water bubbler/mini fridge combo for only $99.00. Of course I bought it on the spot and when I got back to my office the next morning I repackaged the fridge and water bubbler and back to Officethat they went with five boxes of manila folders and a few other overpriced items and I saved more than $225.00. Not too shabby. And to think that this was only one trip over the past ten years. How much could I have been saving the whole time?

When I try to mention this finding to people in my local business community I hear things like “who cares, it’s all a write off anyway” or “you should buy American”(as if these office superstores are all loaded with American made products.) These are both some of the worst excuses for spending way too much money for no reason I have ever heard. It is all a write off but saving several hundred dollars a month on office products allows more flexibility in other areas of my business. As far as the old “Buy American” thing, this one makes me laugh; I would literally have to hire a full time employee to determine what is made here and what isn’t. I usually just respond with something like “I’ll buy everything American if you start buying American gasoline or start riding your bicycle.” I am as American as the next person whose ancestors came over on the Mayflower but the bottom line is that when I am done with my office supply purchases now I have a lot of money left over.

Don’t get me wrong, I still use the office superstores for certain items when I don’t have time to go into a department store (they are convenient) and for one or two small items it is worth paying more. When I need to fill my supply cabinet, on the other hand, I will surely take a trip to Wal-mart, K-mart or even Target to save literally a bundle of cash. I simply don’t care how neatly organized the office goliaths are because with a little more effort you can find everything you need for your office and a little more while saving hundreds of dollars at a department store.

Self builds offer people the chance to obtain their dream home at a reasonably affordable price. As a result, more and more people are turning away from property development in favour of pursuing self build projects.

The new trend in self builds is a direct result of rising property prices and housing supply shortages. Indeed, there has been a huge decline in commercial house building since the 1970s, which the government has tried to resolve by setting a target of 3.8 million new homes by 2021.

Many people are addressing this problem by deciding to build their own houses rather than relying on what is available on the existing market.

There are a number of advantages of self builds. Lower costs and higher quality are amongst the key benefits. On average, people who self build save between 20 and 30% of the house price. Furthermore, self build houses are generally of a much higher specification and are constructed with better quality building materials than existing properties.

On top of this, you do not need to pay VAT on self builds. This can represent a significant cost saving when you consider the VAT that is normally paid on building work, fixtures and fittings.

Self builds can be both financially and personally rewarding so that at the end of a project you are left with more money in your pocket and your dream home to live in.

Many of us today live hectic lives, so when we finally find a couple of hours to clean house, we want the supplies all together and ready to go. Taking time to hunt down the cleanser or to run to the store for furniture polish can break your stride and divert your attention. Spend an hour or two organizing and stocking your cleaning supplies ahead of time, so when you’re ready to start your chores, there won’t be any delays.

Begin with finding a storage area for the larger equipment. This could be a tall utility closet or storage enclosure that can be kept in the laundry room, basement, or garage. The cabinet can open with a turn handle or a snap-lock. Even one with a curtain cover, you can keep the dust mop, broom, and wet mop there, along with a bucket, sponges, brushes, and other implements. If you don’t have a cabinet, you can still keep these items together in a corner of the laundry room or a hall closet. Just make sure the area is neat, clean, and moisture-free.

Use a wooden, vinyl, or plastic crate for cleaning products like cleansers, polishes, and soaps. Find a safe place to keep the crate where pets and kids are unlikely to come across these things and tamper with them. You may need to use more than one crate to include all your supplies. In fact, you can keep a crate of needed cleaning supplies on each floor of the house, since cleaning needs may differ. For example, if the main bathrooms are on the second floor, the crate for that level will include tub cleaner, sponges, and maybe a little rust treatment if your water is hard. In the basement, though, you may want to keep stronger scrubbing agents and dusters.

Inside the crates, closets, and cupboards, organize your cleaning products in the order you will use them, preferably with the tallest in the back and shorter ones in the front. Make sure that all container caps are secured tightly. Wipe away spilled droplets or powder before putting away your supplies for the next time. Set aside used sponges or cloths for washing so they will be ready for the next use. You will want to occasionally clean the broom, mop, dustpan, and other equipment to keep them neat and germ-free.

When cleaning supplies go on sale, stock up on your favorites and store them in neat cases or on storage shelves at home. This way you can avoid paying top dollar when you run out of something you need and shop in a hurry. If a product has an expiration date, though, just be sure to use it before that date comes up.

Don’t wait to check your supplies when you’re ready to begin cleaning. It’s frustrating to pick up a can of cleaner for the bathroom sink, only to realize it’s empty, or near so. Plan ahead, organize your supplies, and save time.

There are welding defects that are sometimes overlooked or not considered. Each welding project requires careful considerations. They include:

  • The process, the type of welding i.e. stick, MIG, TIG.
  • The composition of the base metal and thickness.
  • The welding position, i. e. flat, vertical, horizontal, overhead.
  • The weld joint and type.
  • Electrical supply and equipment.
  • And finally, the welding techniques to be used.
  • To minimize the chance of welding defects be sure to consider 1) the travel speed of the pass; 2) the size and type electrode; 3) machine settings; 4) make sure the welding is done in accordance with the plan and the current conditions.

Most of, or a great deal of, welding defects can be identified by the “naked eye.” By knowing what is likely to produce welding defects you will learn how to avoid them. Production without defects saves time, materials, repair costs, and a decrease in productivity.

The two following causes for weld rejection should not be but are often overlooked 1) is the weldor proficient with the process being used? 2) is the welding rod supply up to standards? Use only properly stored, dried, and maintained welding rods.

Welding defects include poor penetration. It’s the failure of the welding rod and base metal to fuse together. It’s caused by a root face that is too big; a root opening that is too small; an electrode that’s too large; slow travel speed or a machine setting that’s too low.

Poor fusion is the failure to blend the layers of weld metal together with the base metal. A lack of fusion is caused by ” . . . failure to raise to the melting point of the base metal or the deposited weld metal,” (Miller Electric Mfg. Co.) It’s caused by improper fluxing; dirty plate surfaces; improper electrode size or type; wrong current settings. Electrodes that do not meet the storing, drying and maintenance specifications also cause it.

Undercutting is another problem that causes welding defects. It burns away the base metal at the toe of the weld. It’s caused by a current adjustment that is too high; an arc gap that is too long or failure to fill up the crater completely with weld metal.

Porosity looks “sponge like,” or like tiny “bubbles” in the weld. It’s caused by gases being released by the cooling weld because a current setting is too high or arc is too long.

Slag inclusion occurs when the slag is not chipped and cleaned properly and then another pass is made over the top. To avoid, 1) prepare the groove and weld properly before each pass; 2) thoroughly clean in between passes; check the machine settings against those suggested by the manufacturer; 3) hold a smaller weld puddle.

A bachelorette party is a relatively new celebration similar to a bridal shower. The groom-to-be isn’t the only one allowed to have a last stand party celebrating the end of his “freedom.” Girls get in on the action now with their own bachelorette parties.

When planning a bachelorette party, consult a party planning specialist from a party supply store. They will have motifs to choose from if you want clean or naughty themed decorations. Clean decorations can include brides and bride apparel, or any theme such as a luau or western party. Naughty parties have decorations shaped like male genitalia!

No matter what your theme is, send out invitations. Make them coordinate with any other decorations you buy. Balloons and streamers in any color, as well as paper products are available at a party supply store. If you are having a night out at the bar, they carry novelty items to take along. A blow up, life sized doll can be attached to the bride via handcuffs. She can wear a fake veil or a T-shirt begging for help.

If you are having a tame party, plan a meal and games. Order in pizza and watch porno movies. Make it a combination naughty and nice party.

Either party requires intimate gifts for the bride. Lingerie, lotions and robes are all fun gifts to give, as well as receive, at a bachelorette party. Take pictures of the bride-to-be trying on her duds to send to the groom-to-be. That qualifies as naughty too.

A stripper might show up, so don’t be shocked. If elderly women are present, prevent them from having strokes! Or they might surprise the young ladies with a thing or two.

Send out thank you cards and a picture of the whole gang at the party. It’s a great way to remember the night!

Acid free double side tape is suitable for use with photographs and mounting other non-museum quality or non-collector quality art.

Adhesive spray makes it real easy to mount photographs and other artwork picture
frames. There are a lot of professional framers that are mount with spray adhesives.

Professional framers generally use vacuum operated mounting equipment that isn’t
possible for home mounting, but with care you can do a very good job with spray
    adhesives.

A brad pusher is used to push brads into the frame to hold the glass, picture on the
mounting board and backing board securely in the picture frame.

It has a magnetic tip that will attract a brad and it has a spring action cylinder that
you pull back to expose the tip and after you have a brad on the tip you release the
spring cylinder and it holds the brad from flopping back and forth while you push it
into the wood of the picture frame.

Angle Clamps is good and heavy and will hold picture frames pieces secure. Four
Corner Framing Clamp is a simple clamp to use to hold all four corners of a picture
frame at one time. It has metal corner braces and threaded rod with thumbnuts to
adjust just a little at a time on each corner.
